Mystic. Moon. Merlin

It's just right that it is so.

Mystic and Moon

Both all healed up. Both beauties. Both mine.

Meet Merlin

He just appeared. Literally.

Harrison and I had gone to the YMCA (he for a volleyball camp and I for a workout) and as we got out of the vehicle, I heard, "Meeew. Meeeeeew."

Shit! I thought for sure one of the outside kittens from the House in the Forest had somehow gotten up into the truck and had managed to survive the 8 mile drive into town. So I sent Harrison in for his camp and I began my search. I SWEAR the meowing was coming from inside the truck. Round and round the truck I paced calling to the mewing sound. He kept answering but would not show himself. A lady parked next to me asked what I was doing. "I hear a kitten", I told her. She asked if I lived in the country cuz that happens all the time. Yeah it does. IN THE WINTER! When it's cold. Not now! Finally after about 15 minutes, I caught a glimpse of a striped thang darting past me. He deposited himself in the wheel well of the next car and I was able to grab him. Well...not one of my kitties from the House in the Forest. So I looked for a litter, a Mama, an owner. Nada. I placed a notice at the Y and in a couple of other neighboring businesses. He was so sweet! Surely he escaped from someone's home and they would be looking for him. My husband commented, "Sharon...they just FIND you."

Fast forward about one month. No one called. And so...

Meet Merlin. He just appeared.

Mystic and Moon

Meet these two beauties.

I came home a couple of weeks ago to find Moon had an eye injury. Off to the vet we went and thankfully her eyeball was intact. Seems she (and her Mama and littermates) have a Chlamydia infection-upper respiratory in nature and very common in outside cats. Evidently, her eyelid swelled up and she scratched it open. Mystic, her sister, had potty problems and so the two earned themselves a vacation indoors while I treat them and fatten them up.

Meanwhile, my Screech passed away about a week ago (another kitty and another saddle thrombosis). That makes 3 that moved on in the past 6 weeks.

And the Kitty Wheel turns too.

Tis Better To Have Loved and Lost...

Living in the Forest has it's pros and cons.

Pros: I love the trees, it's cool most of the time and it's very private and secluded.

Cons: Bugs aplenty, and it is almost impossible to have a garden.

This year, after several years of working the land and trying against nature to get veggies to grow in our soil (soil which has passed testing and has been labeled "balanced and fertile"), I moved on to container gardening. As a trial, I planted 3 tomato plants and a pepper plant each in separate containers and placed them on our driveway which is the sunniest spot on the property. I also figured I could move the containers around with a fair amount of ease to "chase" the sunlight if need be.

So far, so good. I got blooms, I even got tomatoes and a couple of peppers.

Enter Gaia, the dog. In one fell swoop on a recent potty outing, her leash got tangled around all 3 tomato cages and toppled the plants over. The result is what you see up top. Most of my tomatoes detached from the plants and useless.

So the tomatoes sat in a bowl on my kitchen counter for a few days and eventually Brian asked, "Do you think those are gonna ripen in that bowl there?"

"NO!", I said. "I'm mourning the loss. That there is the tomato altar."

And out to the composter they went, hopefully to offer their energy to another growing thing.

The Wheel turns...

My Fairy

Your fairy is called Feather Hailfly
She is a protector of the lonely.
She lives in high places where the clouds meet the earth.
She is only seen at midday under a quiet, cloudless sky.
She wears pale blue like the sky. She has cheery turquoise wings like a butterfly.

Summer Sux

Opinion.

Summer is really my least favorite season.

Temperatures in the 90's to 100's with heat indexes of over 100 and 100% humidity are completely useless.

The over sized mosquitoes that leave silver dollar sized bites and the possibility of disease are not welcomed here.

The activity of the season seems to be getting quickly from one air conditioned environment to another...home...car...store/library/etc.

Give me an ice storm over this anytime. It is so much easier to get warm than it is to cool off.

This concludes this session of Bitch About the Summer.
