Living in the Forest has it's pros and cons.
Pros: I love the trees, it's cool most of the time and it's very private and secluded.
Cons: Bugs aplenty, and it is almost impossible to have a garden.
This year, after several years of working the land and trying against nature to get veggies to grow in our soil (soil which has passed testing and has been labeled "balanced and fertile"), I moved on to container gardening. As a trial, I planted 3 tomato plants and a pepper plant each in separate containers and placed them on our driveway which is the sunniest spot on the property. I also figured I could move the containers around with a fair amount of ease to "chase" the sunlight if need be.
So far, so good. I got blooms, I even got tomatoes and a couple of peppers.
Enter Gaia, the dog. In one fell swoop on a recent potty outing, her leash got tangled around all 3 tomato cages and toppled the plants over. The result is what you see up top. Most of my tomatoes detached from the plants and useless.
So the tomatoes sat in a bowl on my kitchen counter for a few days and eventually Brian asked, "Do you think those are gonna ripen in that bowl there?"
"NO!", I said. "I'm mourning the loss. That there is the tomato altar."
And out to the composter they went, hopefully to offer their energy to another growing thing.
